Vanilla Superfood Matcha Latte!

A few months ago, my boyfriend went to Tokyo for work, and brought me back a whole matcha set, so I actually had the materials on hand to make my craving happen! It’s also SUPER easy, so if you don’t have a set, noooooo worries.

Matcha is a must in your life since it is one of the healthiest {& delicious!} teas out there. The best matcha is from Japan & made with the best leaves out there. In fact, just by looking at it, you can see it’s vibrant, beautiful green colour – which means it is extremely rich in chlorophyll.

Matcha translates to “powdered tea”, so rather than infusing tea leaves, you are drinking the actual leaves.

Since you are ingesting the tea as a whole, it is extremely potent with its polyphenols. Green tea is known for having ECGC, which is an antioxidant that helps your metabolism, which makes matcha so great for managing body weight. ECGC also helps regulate blood sugar & pressure. All good things in my book.

I don’t drink dairy milk so I always have either almond, coconut, or hemp milk on deck. For matcha, that is actually ideal.. In fact, dairy is known to interfere with the body’s absorption of the antioxidants, thanks to the protein casein found in cow’s milk! {source}

Not only do you get maximum antioxidant absorption with the non-dairy milk, but it complements the nuttiness of the matcha well. I personally recommend using hemp milk, I LOVE the flavour of it, but you seriously cannot go wrong with coconut or almond.

Now, at this point, I wanted a little bit of sweetness, rather than just tea and “milk”. I went through my cupboard and made a Superfood blend of Mesquite Powder, Raw Premium Maca, and Coconut Palm Sugar. I also added a kiss of vanilla extract to the milk to really lend to the creamy attributes.

Now these ingredients might sound a little weird so let me break them down.

To be completely honest, coconut sugar is the only sweetener I keep in the house.  I LOVE the taste of it – It has a bit of a toffee, caramel flavour {in fact, for that reason, it is SO good in chocolate chip cookies}! It is full of B & C vitamins, as well as amino acids. For a sugar, it is lower on the Glycemic Index  – Anything under a GI value of 55 is considered low, and Coconut sugar ranks in at a GI of 30 {by comparison, regular sugar ranges from 65-80}. Pretty much, the Glycemic Index. The higher the GI, the faster the blood sugar levels rise. The faster the blood sugar rises, the more insulin that is produced in your body, which can lead to weight gain & cause other health problems. At the end of the day, like all things, you want to keep your blood sugar levels balanced, erring on the lower side.

Mesquite Powder

I LOVE Mesquite powder! It is wonderful in coffee or hot cacao, and I use it in anything I put coconut sugar in. It also has a bit of a molasses-ey, toffee taste, & pairs very well with coconut sugar. Mesquite Powder is crushed seed pods of the Mesquite, or Algorroba, plant. It is high in protein, fiber, amino acids (lysine), antioxidants, vitamins, and other minerals (magnesium, zinc, calcium). It also keeps blood sugar levels regulated, since it only has a GI of 25.

Raw Premium Maca

I started getting on the maca train around 2013 when I randomly saw it on Instagram, and have been hooked ever since! Maca is a well-regarded Peruvian superfood, made from a root in the radish family. I find it has a bit of a butterscotch-malt nose to it. It provides a natural form of energy {I add this to my collagen coffees}, balances hormones, helps relieve stress, and is great for the libido {which is just a feel good, all around}.

It is also high in protein, vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, and minerals.

There are three different types of maca: red, black, & yellow.

The blend I use from The Maca Team uses all three. Yellow, or cream, is the most common & least expensive. Red maca is the second-most rare one, and great for bone health. Black is the most rare. In fact, black maca is supposed to be great for the guys… if anyone is looking for a sexy valentine’s gift for two 😉

Finally, you can get maca raw or gelatinized (or pre cooked to remove starch). I went with the raw, which retains all of it’s nutrients, but can cause indigestion for some people. If you have a sensitive stomach, go the gelatinized route.

This cup of love is so nourishing, and tastes a little sinful that you cannot believe it is good for you! It is also super versatile – make it yours!

You can also super simplify things and keep it just matcha and “milk”. It will still be crazy healthy for you, and satisfying. You won’t even miss the coffee, since the matcha has the same amount of caffeine! Also, if you want to take the antioxidants to the next level, brew the hot water with green tea before adding the matcha! This makes things suuuper green 🙂

The vanilla is totally optional, but I like to take it to the next level and use a vanilla infused nut milk as a base, and then add more vanilla. Vanilla is one of my absolute favourite scents & flavours so the more the better for me. I personally love matcha & green tea together… it reminds me of a marshmallow!

Oh! & if you blend it, add in a spoonful of coconut oil!

Vanilla Superfood Matcha Latte

Ingredients::

– 1/2 – 1 tbsp of Matcha {I use this one – also recommend this }
– 1/2 cup Water { just below boiling }
– Non-Dairy Milk, heated {I recommend coconut, hemp, or almond}
Vanilla extract
Maca Powder { no free shipping but seriously the best }
Mesquite Powder
Coconut Palm Sugar 

Optional:

Matcha Whisk
Matcha Bowl
Blender
Latte FoamerCoconut Oil {this brand is THE BEST and the only I use – I can do a whole post if y’all want. Not sponsored.}
Green tea {to brew with the water}

With a Blender:

1. Place all in a blender and blend until foamy. Optional: add coconut oil. Easy.

Without a Blender / With A Matcha Set:

1. In a Matcha bowl or regular bowl, add 1/2 tsp of matcha powder to hot water. Whisk (or use a fork) until blended. Add to coffee cup.
›› Optional: Brew Green tea with the hot water prior to adding matcha for an extra punch.
2. Add vanilla extract to “milk”, and heat. Whisk in mesquite powder, maca powder, & coconut palm sugar.
3. Add hot vanilla “milk” woth superfoods to coffee cup.
4. Whisk until frothed, or use a latte foamer.

NOTE:: Do NOT reheat the beverage after the matcha is added, or it will overcook & taste bitter. Make sure the water & “milk” is at the ideal temperature for serving before you add the matcha!

    I have been drinking matcha (no latte, just plain) for quite some time now, but I stopped throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the high amount of caffeine. I guess I will have to wait for a few more months now to give that one a go!

      I was surprised by how much caffeine was in matcha – but I’m a total fiend, so it was more like pleasantly surprised 😉
      I know some of the ingredients I put in are weird and totally on the optional side, andthis may sound crazy BUT if you do it with just the vanilla non-dairy milk & a little more vanilla, I swear, it kind of tastes like a marshmallow & is so fluffy in texture! I’ve had four in the past 48 hours because I keep craving them! xx
