the thinking box

& a peek to the week ahead

Some of my favorite conversations are those little conversations I have with my husband before bed. They’re basically in those last ten minutes of the night riiiiiight before you shut your eyes to sleep.

The other night, Erik was talking about his office to which I asked: “do you keep your door open or closed?” A little random, but I was sleepy & curious… and to be honest, his answer surprised me.

“Yes, absolutely – at all times.”

My { very type 8 } response?: “you gotta close that door!”

& he was surprised by my answer!

I explained to him my thinking: having your door open welcomes interruptions. I asked how many times people freely come and go to his office & he said {unsurprisingly} constantly. To which I told HIM that he’s not having any protected time to himself to think. Any time he might be thinking, he is interrupted. & as anyone knows, it’s very hard to recover after an interruption. I recently read it takes 15-30 minutes to recover from an interruption. That ish adds up FAST… not to mention, it only slows you down.

I told him on slow days, close the door all day if he can. I know that’s not entirely possible, of course. So on busy days? mark it in your calendar for 15-30 minutes. Close the door, & let your mind go. Not to mention, it’s a great reflection for his colleagues, especially those junior or younger than him. It encourages prioritizing time to think, record those thoughts & use those thoughts to later strategize your business. If you think about it, it actually is beneficial to all parties ever involved, you know? Ultimately, getting better at your job & doing what you’re paid for to your greatest extent.

Whatever job it is you’re doing, your thoughts & ideas are what are most valuable. Take the time out to be in tune with them and record them when they hit. It’s extremely easy to confuse your job with tasks within it like emails or phone calls {or instagram lol}.

The next day, Erik texted me a photo of his office {the main photo to this post!} & said “my thinking box”.

Don’t be afraid to close the door – I encourage it. If I’m ever in the ZONE here at home, I’ll even go upstairs on the patio by myself or in a room and close the door. These moments are SO valuable that I can’t let anything interrupt me.

Just something to think about this weekend 🙂

“No one cares, work harder” – Erik Schuchard‘s motto of the week lol

“What we call reality is, in fact, nothing more than a culturally sanctioned and linguistically reinforced hallucination.” – Terence McKenna

“it’s easy to be bored if you’re not interested, it’s impossible to be interested if you’re not present” – from a yoga class this week <3

products on my radar

i keep notes on everything I want! Here’s what I jotted down this week

Timeular Time Tracking cube: an innovative way to know exactly where your time is going and when by the second. I’m working on extreme discipline so this is a great way to hold myself accountable.

Tarte Sugar Coat Velvet Lip: I saw this recently on one of my fav youtubers, Tatiana Ringsby, & I need to have it too! @tringsby always has the best beauty finds and I love her focus on clean products. This pink nude shade is so flattering & it smells like vanilla!

Reformation Mason Pant: I never needed a pair of pants so bad. I love the pleated front & wide leg. The options to wear it are endless but my fav way? A thick black belt with either a white tee or white oxford shirt with the shoes below.

Superga White Gold Espadrille sneakers: I wanted these babies ever since I saw them on my friend Jannika – both when I was in New York & on her Instagram! They’re seriously the perfect sneaker to go with everything. I especially love them with a relaxed mockneck knit dress like the Meagan dress from Ref… love this look for wine country!

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is magnificent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
