How To Style A Statement Coat

Nothing like January in San Francisco! The weather gets chilly, the skies get grey, & it rains more this month than it does the entire year.

Personally, I love this type of weather. One thing I miss from Texas is the rain, & well, if we are being honest, this weather is totally my aesthetic af, ha!

One of my Christmas presents from Erik was this darling red statement coat Olivia Palermo designed for Banana Republic. Remember when I lusted for it here?! Well, Erik is a peach {& reminder to myself to post about more things I want on the blog} & it really made my holiday. If you follow along on instagram, you know I didn’t take it off until we had to go to Jenner.

From the daring red colour, to the full length, to the gold military style – this coat is a major winner. The one I’m wearing is only available in a small & medium {buy here – I’m wearing a small – it fits true to size} so I’ll link similar ones below as well as other coats I am just SO digging this winter.

When it comes to styling a statement coat, it’s actually quite easy! I’ve worn this coat with everything from athleisure {seriously!} to slip dresses. They are super easy to dress up and down.

Today, I’m sharing my 5 tips on how to style a statement jacket!

my tips on how to style a statement coat

{ ONE }: Balance the Boldness with Simplicity

It’s no secret, the coat is the star of the show, so pair it with simple basics. I wore this coat with a black turtleneck {real shocker, I know}, white button downs, denim, leather skinnies {as pictured}, & a slip dress. By keeping the underneath basic, it didn’t steal the shine from to coat but still kept things totally chic!

{ TWO }: Add dimension with different lengths

If the coat is floor length, pair it with a slinky short dress. I love long coats with slip dresses but you guys know I love the boudoir look. If it’s a cropped faux fur jacket, pair it with elongating skinny jeans to make your legs look endless. Play around with different lengths & hemlines!

{ THREE }: Accessorize!

One of my favourite ways to dress up any look in a subtle yet flirty way is to add nude fishnets – check it out on me here! There is something just so sexy about it, yet it’s not overpowering. If the jacket is multicoloured, go with sheer black tights. Jewelry, keep things matching the details of the jackets. I personally don’t wear much jewelry, but this would go gorgeous with some gold arm candy. If you’re like me and jewelry isn’t your thing, then accessorize with makeup. A bold lip will never lead you astray!

{ FOUR }: Go casual and nail that off duty look

One thing that’s great about a statement coat is that you can elevate a super casual outfit. I wore this with a white t, boyfriend jeans, my gold blue light glasses {my fave accessory} & sneakers for an off duty look that’s totally chic. A statement coat can dress up the most casual . Don’t believe me? Take it from Kendall Jenner here.

{ FIVE }: Mix up the textures!

From velvet, leather, silk, tweed, wool, denim, corduroy, faux fur, lace… the options are endless! Contrasting the fabrics really add to the chic factor. Some of my favourite matches are lace + leather, tweed/wool + denim, silk + velvet, faux fur + leather. Mix it up!
