SILVER OAK RELEASE DAY: CELEBRATING THE 2015 ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The other week, we did a really impromptu trip to New York City – so impromptu, it was only 24ish hours because we had to be back in Napa Valley for one of our favourite events… the Silver Oak Release Day Party!

Silver Oak is a well regarded winery known for their striking Cabernet Sauvignon. They make that & only that from two different sources: Napa Valley & Alexander Valley. Bi-annually in February & August respectively, they release the current vintage to the public… & throw one giant party!

We are huge fans of Silver Oak – HUGE. In fact, that was a major reason why we joined as members of Twomey, their sister winery so we can get all the Silver Oak perks {Silver Oak does not have any memberships}. Highly recc, especially if you love Pinot Noir, Merlot, or Sauvignon Blanc – their parties are fabulous too!

As we walked in to their Napa Winery, we were greeted with some Twomey Sauvignon Blanc {one of my fav sauv blancs!} & explored the premises.

Outside, live music was playing and many local restaurants, including our fav BOUNTY HUNTER!!!!, had booths full of their amazing food. Experiences included a photo by the vineyards to take home with you, which I love, as well as walking through their amazing herb garden.

I mention my love for the Silver Oak cookbook here but chef Dominic made an Umami mushroom burger that was out of this world. Erik was SHOCKED that there was no meat in it. This was made to complement the newly released 2015 Alexander Valley Cab. This is a MUST make – here’s the recipe! I’ll def be making this & will report back. 🙂 {can make vegan too!}

As far as the 2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – we loved it.

In fact, it’s so fun to reflect on these releases since it’s when I moved here. I actually moved to California right at the 2013 harvest. 2014 was my first “real”year in California & if we are being honest? 2015 was one of my favourite years of all time. In fact, we were at Silver Oak CONSTANTLY that year.

I love to personally reflect on my life here in California as I taste the wines. In fact, next bottle of wine you open – look at the vintage and really think about what is going on. Would be fun as an icebreaker too to share too! Erik & I loveeeee to do this together.

Anyways enough about me, let’s talk the wine. WE LOVED IT!!

In 2015, we were still going through our drought here. Budbreak was early followed by a cool spell. The fruit itself was smaller but it sure was mighty! The 2015 vintage is deeply concentrated in colour, palate, & aromatics in all the best ways. Think a rich deep maroon & velvety texture. Aromatics range from black cherry to smoked meats to baking spices. Palate wise, it’s very juicy: think currant, caramelized sugars, & black fruits. Elegant tannins with a long lingering finish…. which makes you want to sip more and more.

It’s ready to drink now but with proper cellaring, it will continue to develop and will drink lovely through 2041. Here’s a great reflection on what the 2015 Vintage means to Nate Weis, their Director of Wine Making & why it won’t be available for long.

2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon specifics via: 95.3% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3.7% Merlot; 0.4% Petit Verdot; 0.3% Malbec; & 0.3% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 24 months in 50% new / 50% once used American Oak. The wine was bottled in spring of 2018 and aged for 15 more months in bottle until it was released.

Speaking of oak, they had a very interactive oak experience where each aroma was captured and you can smell each one seperately & see how they worked together. They use their own cooperage in Missouri called The Oak & the winemaker was there to walk you through everything from start to finish – Erik LOVED it!! Read more about the making of an American Oak barrel from Silver Oak themselves here.

Be sure to check out Silver Oak & their events!! They are complementary for members but so worth purchasing tickets if you aren’t one. It’s one of our personal favourite wineries in both Napa & the Alexander Valley {they serve the same wines at both}

I can do a full blown post on the Alexander Valley location {Healdsburg} but that one has a more modern feel where the Napa location has a more “classic Napa” feel – if that makes sense. In fact, the Alexander Valley interior has a very Japanese interior feel which I love.

If you have any questions – feel free to ask! I will be posting TONS of more content from wine country here. 🙂

What are your favourite wineries in Napa? Always looking for new ones to add to my list!
