PUMPKIN BEER SZN! Here are my favs:

essellesse talks the best pumpkin beers to try in 2018 || dogfish head punkin ale

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I was casually strolling through Whole Foods & saw the Dogfish Punkin Ale on display & I don’t think I’ve ever made a faster purchase.

The second Erik saw it, he was like… let me guess, you bought it because of the black cat on the label?

To be fair, he wasn’t entirely wrong… Make something pumpkin flavoured & add a black cat on the label and there will be a 99.7% chance I will buy it.

This was no exception… & boy oh boy am I glad I did because this is my new favourite beer for the season! It’s basically Fall in a beer.

DOGFISH HEAD PUNKIN ALE :: essellesse talks her favourite pumpkin beers of 2018!

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

Dogfish Head is a brewery based in Delaware famous for their IPAs.

The Punkin ale is a full bodied spiced brown ale {huge fan of red, brown, or dark ales}  brewed with baked pumpkins, cinnamon, nutmeg, & brown sugar. YUM! It clocks in at 7% ABV & tbh, I like higher alcohol beers. I find it adds another level of complexity. I especially like them in the cooler temps because they can help keep ya warm lol

I can’t get enough… not to mention the label has a black cat so all I want to do is sip this outside on the patio with Lucy.

I got this at Whole Foods so def be on the look out for it.

If you can’t find it, no stress:

here are some other rad pumpkin beers to be on the lookout for!

{ ONE }:  Elysian  Brewing Dark Knife :: this is one of my all time fav breweries! I love their Space Dust IPA. This is their first go at a Schwarzbier {a black German beer}. Pale barley, dark malt, & hops are brewed with cinnamon, ginger, & 90lbs of pumpkin! This clocks in at about 4.3% ABV.

{ TWO }: Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale :: This is a crisp, wheat pumpkin beer  lighter in body & alcohol: 4.5% ABV. It’s refreshing with notes of pumpkin & cinnamon. What’s super fun about it is how they suggest to serve it: rim a pint glass with cinnamon & sugar and a side of spiced rum or vodka… cheers!

{ THREE }: New Belgium Voodoo Atomic Pumpkin :: Not your basic pumpkin beer! This beer is spicy in all the right ways: cinnamon, habaneros, & Aji / Del Arbo peppers. They are all brewed together with pumpkin. Pale in colour, medium bodied with a warm mouthfeel & ABV: 6.4%

{ FOUR }: Schlafly Pumpkin Ale :: This is a favourite of many & tastes like pumpkin pie! It’s full bodied, ABV of 8%, and fermented with tons of pumpkin & butternut squash & then filtered through an infusion of cinnamon, clove & nutmeg. They just released a super limited edition White Pumpkin ale and apparently some 6 packs have a surprise with this! If you get your hands on one, let me know!

{ FIVE }: Elyisan Night Owl Pumpkin Ale :: Back at it with Elysian, but what can I say, I love their stuff. This medium bodied pumpkin ale has 6.7% ABV & brewed with both raw & roasted pumpkin seeds, as well as pumpkin & all the baking spices: cinnamon, allspice, clove, nutmeg, & ginger.

{ SIX }: Elysian The Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale :: Elysian comes out with quite a few pumpkin ales and this one has the highest ABV out of all of them: 8.4%. It’s medium bodied & like the above is brewed with roasted pumpkin seeds, raw pumpkin & the baking spices.

{ SEVEN }: Elysian Punkucinno :: This is so fun & the last I have from Elysian! It’s a pumpkin coffee ale which sure kicks the PSLs ass in a major way!  This ale is brewed with Stumptown coffee, raw pumpkin, & nutmeg and has an ABV of 6%

{ EIGHT }: Firestone Walker Brewing El Gourdo :: This beer is made with roasted caramelized Cinderella pumpkins, bay laurel, walnuts {!!!NOTE FOR THOSE W NUT ALLERGIES!!!}, brandy staves & white oak. Flavours range from sweet spicy pumpkin to earthly funk & ABV: 5.8%

{ NINE }: Saint Arnold Pumpkinator ::  Of course this Houstonian had to include Saint Arnold! Everything is bigger in Texas and so is this beer at a whopping 10.5% ABV. It’s a black, spicy stout with pumpkin, molasses, brown sugar, & tons of spices. This is released every 10/15!

{ TEN }:  Rogue Pumpkin Patch Ale :: This is a super special beer since it is made with pumpkins that Rogue grows themselves on their Oregon farm. Ingredients include dream pumpkins, vanilla, orange peel, & baking spices. You can find it both in an orange bottle or their limited edition black one {if you see it, buy it and instagram it!!}. Medium bodied with an ABV of 6.1%. I have a personal soft spot for this brewery as it’s one of the very first places when I went to in SF back in 2013 that is now closed.

Any pumpkin beers that I left out?? Let me know! I’m always on the hunt for new ones.

In fact, a super fun date would be to buy a ton of these and do a flight at home and see which pumpkin beer you like best… I may have to take my own advice on this!
