It’s no secret, we are obsessed obsessed with Imperfect Foods.

In fact, Erik was the one that discovered it! We tried it for the first time in October & it became an instant addition weekly over here chez Silver Schuchard.

The best way to explain Imperfect Foods is “the farmer’s market to your door”.

Basically, Imperfect Foods is an online grocer on a mission to eliminate food waste that sells surplur or “ugly” / “imperfect” produce directly from farmers, growers, & food purveyors.

But here’s the thing: the produce really isn’t that ugly. It may have a bit more bumps, or bruising, or may not be even in size. Either way, this can’t be sold in the grocery store due to cosmetic reasons. Erik always jokes that the produce isn’t ugly enough LOL

SO- instead of tossing it {& believe me, you’d be shocked what gets tossed}, it gets distributed through Imperfect Foods & the price gets slashed!

Really, it’s a win-win. Did you know that 40% of all the food produced in the US goes uneaten? Not only do you help join the fight against food waste but you save so much money doing so!

Things end up on Imperfect for a variety of reasons: visual imperfections that don’t affect taste, new packaging, surplus items… the list goes on. It’s a grocery delivery company that does good & makes me feel good about using.

How does imperfect Foods work?

Each week, you have a set delivery. For example, our delivery comes in every single Tuesday.

So on Friday, I get a text or email from Imperfect telling me that my cart is ready to customize. What’s fun is that Imperfect will put a box together for you & you can customize from there. I have until Sunday at 12:00 noon to finish my cart & whatever is in there by the cut off is what I’m getting! Each week, the items change depending what’s available.

As you shop their catalogue, I appreciate that they include both: photos of ingredients & nutritional facts as well as the reason for the imperfection. Everything is completely transparent – including the price!

In fact, I’m always shocked by how low our grocery bill is these days. I’d actually say we are spending 60% less than what we were.

Also, you can have them completely customize it {quantities and all} & never think about it. If you’re not a picky eater, this would be such a fun way to try new recipes on the fly!

what exactly are the imperfections?

They really break it down here, but imperfections include:

+ Surplus: Some harvests are more bountiful than others or the market can get saturated with what’s trendy. Anyone remember the celery juice craze??? It was impossible to find celery = but there were so many other perfectly good food & produce that was being looked over.

+ Off-Spec: food that doesn’t meet the specifications set by the buyer. So think tri-color quinoa that’s mostly red vs an even amount of red, white, & black, even if it’s off by a minuscule amount.

+ Cosmetic: think any fruits, vegetables, & nuts with scars. grocery stores take all the beautiful, & unblemished items so these get sold via Imperfect vs being scrapped completely.

+ Packaging Change: when a brand changes packaging, the old packaging usually gets stored & forogtten in warehouses or thrown out so Imperfect sells these for a fraction of the price. Basically, the same exact item with a different name or label

+ Short Coded: some stores won’t stock items with expiration dates within a few months. Instead, Imperfect gets it to you vs being stranded in a warehouse or tossed out!

some of my fav things to include in my imperfect box

kale & spinach: i have this set up to automatically be included every single week!! I throw it in whatever I can – shred it & chop it real fine & it’s the easiest way to get extra nutrients in ANYTHING you are eating

red meat: we rotate from dry aged ground beef, to wagyu, to tenderloin depending on what’s available. as you can see, all options are fantastic!

quick cooking brown rice {Imperfect’s brand!}: these grains are shaved to various lengths which is their “flaw” but not really, because the smaller, uneven grains make for a shorter cooking time. This brown rice takes about 20 minutes to make!

lemons: tons and tonsssss of lemons. I go through so much a week so it’s nice to have a constant delivery

mushroom ravioli: this is our fav thing to make after Japanese class since it’s so quick, super delicious, & substantial on it’s own without meat {but I do love it with some sliced proscuitto}. I like it tossed with kale, spinach, cracked black pepper, sea salt, & chile flake & sometimessss a kiss of balsalmic or olive oil

take & bake breads: these are so fun & always a treat for dinner! a veryyyy lazy approach to fresh baked bread. We like these for afternoon cheese & charcuterie plates too!

goldenberries: this is where I discovered nature’s sour patch kid

cherry kissed dried cranberries {imperfect brand!}: these are SO GOOD!!! They are sweet & juicy. So delicious topped over some almond butter & whole wheat toast.

the box always makes me smile 🙂

I’ll share a full on grocery list soon & maybe it would be a fun semi-regular series?? I can show what I’m getting weekly and how we used it maybe??

But anyways, they literally have everything. In fact, I’d say it’s completely on par to Whole Foods – everything is on the healthyish side.

I was also shocked by how many locations there are! Out of curiousity, I put my old Dallas zip code in & was pleasantly surprised to see that they cover so many areas!

& if you use my referral link, you get $10 off {& I get $10 off too!} and you’ll see, $10 can get you a lot with Imperfect!! 😉

Give it a go & let me know how it goes?? x
