Spicy Lemon-Aid

Get your AM Detox on!

Get your morning started off right with blogger Shannon Silver's spicy detox lemon-aid! It's super easy, nourishing, healthy af, and anti-aging! yes, yes & MORE yes!

Over the years, I have found that I have gotten my schedule pretty regimented – and I love it that way.

I wake up early in the morning and…
–   [if I am not washing my hair] re-twist my hair in a bun and spray it with my home made salt spray;
–   oil-pull;
–   do some ab/thigh exercises;
–   check e-mails, usually while doing planks;
–   spit out the oil;
–   brush my teeth with a charcoal toothpaste;
–   floss with tea-tree floss;
–   shower**;
–   wash my face with – depending on the day – either a lemon sugar exfoliating scrub, an activated charcoal cleanser, or a Lavender Seafoam Cleanser;
–   apply my Lavender Tonique (aka toner);
–   put on my Egyptian Magic mixed with a little anti-aging BB cream;
–   do my eyebrows (this is seriously a routine on it’s own);
–   take my supplements;
–   get dressed;
–   feed my cat, make sure she has fresh water, and her playlist on (I’ve kept the same ipod playlist since 2010, it has become my background music);
–   take down & shake out my hair;
–   take the bus to work & browse Instagram/Pinterest;
–   [if it is Monday,] stop by the market to pick up at least 5 lemons;
** This is a whole other routine within the routine because I only wash my hair 1-2x a week.

….and the second I get to work, I beeline to the kitchen to make my lemon drink.

I find my routine really helps me get in the mood mentally for the day ahead.

Literally, it is the first thing I do when I get to the office, and I spend my time on the bus actually looking forward to it. It is the first thing I drink in the morning that is not just plain water.

I have to have this before coffee, tea, or anything. Not only does it taste like the best lemonade ever, but it is seriously nourishing and hydrating.

For starters, you always want to be sure to have a glass of water first thing in the morning, and last thing as night. Your body loses water while sleeping, so you will wake up a bit dehydrated.

If you’re anything like me, and like to have a nightcap before bed, then you will wake up slightly more dehydrated. If we are being real, it’s a con that I am willing to live with, as long as I take the right steps the next day.

Shannon’s Spicy Lemon-Aid Detox

fleur16  Water (hot or cold but rad benefits when warm)
fleur16 Juice of 1 Lemon
fleur16 Super Enriched Honey
fleur16 Ginger
fleur16 Cayenne

Directions: Fill a cup with water – I try to get between 12-18oz. Take a lemon, and roll it under the palm of your hand on the kitchen counter, applying some pressure. This will make it easier to get squeeze the juice out of it. Slice that lemon in half and squeeeeze. Once lukewarm (if hot), take a tsp of honey, and stir until it melts in the water. Generously sprinkle with ginger and cayenne to your liking. Done & done!

One thing I do that is a huge time-saver, as you can see pictured above, is I buy my Ginger and Cayenne in bulk and mix it in an empty spice jar.

I use Spicely Organics for this, not only are their spices the best, but they are right across from the office. They make it very easy to buy bulk, and carry the empty spice jars. I like buying in bulk, because I always have some on hand for when I run out.

Now, you are going to think I am really crazy, but the spice shaker pictured above is solely for this drink. I like mine a little bit on the spicier side so I do a a ratio of 1 part Cayenne : 3 parts Ginger. It is very easy to adjust according to your taste. Just add however much ginger + cayenne you want, and shake it up to evenly distribute the spices.

let’s analyze the ingredients

ONE }: Hot Water: “regularly drinking very warm water, especially in the morning, can heal our bodies, providing digestive power and reducing metabolic waste that could have built up in our immune system” or in other words nourishes the body, digestive, and metabolic system. { source }

TWO }: Lemon Juice:  full of important vitamins & antioxidants, such as vitamin C. great for the digestive system, which is emphasized with the warm water above. Lemons help control (key words: can help, not cure) blood pressure, aid in weight loss, and are delicious. Win, win, and win. { source }

THREE }: Super Enriched Honey = Raw, Unfiltered Honey with Bee Pollen, Bee Propolis, & Royal Jelly. >>> my FAVOURITE part!

Bee Pollen: superfood that has proven to have energy boosting properties, aids with digestive properties (triple whammy now), great for helping {again, key word} fight allergies. I personally love it because it really does gives me a natural buzz of energy. { source }

Bee Propolis: adhesive in the beehives sealing the cracks, made from tree sap, leaves, beeswax, other botanicals. Propolis is used to protect the bees and disinfect the hive. It is majorly healing, and full of antioxidants. { source – on a side note, it is also great for dental hygiene – I keep a tincture of it in my medicine cabinet }

Royal Jelly: The good stuff. This is what the Queen Bee eats – literally, she is fed this by her worker bees – and it is just full of benefits, including, but not limited to, liver protection (a must if you love your nightcaps), fertility, anti-aging, weight loss, blood circulation, and metabolic activity. Pretty much, you want this in your life. Also, the supplements mentioned above include this. { source // another bomb article on Royal Jelly HERE by one of my favourite blogs}

FOUR }: Ginger: Not only is it delicious, but it has anti-inflammatory properties, great for the digestive system – again! – and aids in weight loss.   “may temporarily increase thermogenesis in your body, where your body burns stored up fat to create heat, with beneficial impacts on overall metabolism and fat storage.” { source }

FIVE }:Cayenne:  help stimulate circulation, aid with digestion, regulate blood pressiure, & clear the sinuses! { source – also, similar to ginger, cayenne can also increase thermogenesis }

Give it a try! I also do a special coffee that I have after I finish my lemon-aid which also uses my spice trick. That alone really saves so much time, and it is soooo much easier to add a few shakes from the spice jar, rather than measuring out certain amounts of different spices. After I make the lemon water, I do the honey & spices at my desk – it is that simple!

I haven’t gotten to it yet, but I have been toying around adding a shot of raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar to this for an extra kick – thoughts?

….And, if you are home sick – or just at home – this would be the perfect to spice up with a shot of of Bourbon. A fun play on a Hotty Toddy.

Do you have a go-to morning drink? Anything else I should add to mine? Let me know!

DISCLAIMER: Many people are allergic to bee products without knowing it. Please consult with your doctor first, or test this on your own with one kernel of bee pollen or a tiny spoonful of the above.
