inspiring quotes for you this month! • January 2020

quotes i loved from my fav newsletter

I LOVE the Monday Morning Lift: a bi-weekly {Monday & Friday} newsletter that’s FULL of suuuuper motivating, inspiring, & positive quotes.

I love it so much, I signed Erik up for it too & we love to send each other or discuss our favourite quotes out loud at the table..

It’s always a fun conversation starter because it always leads to HUGE conversations about our dreams for the future, goals, & work we have to do to get them.

In fact, these convos are my fave & I always say one of the biggest honors is having Erik as my {forever!} dining companion every single night. For the past seven years, he’s never ceased to fascinate me with our dinner chats!

SO- I wanted to share my fav quotes & the ones that really resonated with me in January 2020. Enjoy!

my fav quotes from the monday morning lift

“That’s because writing good stuff isn’t a hack. It’s hard. It takes time and creativity. It can’t be manufactured. It works, with a near 100% success rate. But it is the social media equivalent of burpees.” ~Morgan Housel, Useful Hacks

“If you build an army of 100 lions and their leader is a dog, in any fight, the lions will die like a dog. BUT if you build an army of 100 dogs and their leader is a lion, all dogs will fight like a lion.” ~Napoleon Bonaparte

“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” ~Charlie Tremendous Jones

“You think when two people are talking someone has to be right or wrong, and I think two people can just have a conversation.” ~Bobby Wagner to KJ Wright, Inside Russell Wilson’s Seahawks, where positivity and corniness reign

“I trust the moon even though she is always changing. So, I think maybe it’s time that I begin to trust myself too.” ~Morgan Scott Poetry

“One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years who makes a success of his life.” ~Unknown

“Find someone who makes you realize three things: one, that home is not a place, but a feeling. Two, that time is not measured by a clock, but by moments. And three, that heartbeats are not heard, but felt and shared.” ~Anonymous

“You wouldn’t plant a seed and then dig it up every few mintues to see if it has grown. So why do you keep questioning yourself, your hard work and your decisions. Have patience, stop overthinking and keep watering your seeds.” ~Steven Bartlett

“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” ~T.E. Lawrence

“If your relationship with someone has developed its own culture; its own language, traditions, humour, values, history and unspoken rules, and if that relationship would look weird to an outsider looking in, then that’s a sign of a very strong relationship. Keep going.” ~Steven Bartlett

“When you have one million dollars you worry about taxes, you worry about inflation. When you have 20 million dollars you worry about what to invest in, which stocks to buy. When you have one billion dollars, that’s not your money. That’s trust that society puts in you because they think that you can use those resources better than they can. That’s what I hope to do, and that’s what I have to do.” ~Jack Ma

“When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.” ~African Proverb

Food for Thought: In C.S. Lewis’s classic novel The Great Divorce, we encounter a traveler plagued by a red lizard who represents lust. The lizard sat on his shoulder, whispering in his ear, hindering him from moving toward the light. An angel asked the traveler if he wants to be rid of the pesky beast, which he answers in the affirmative. As the angel grasps the lizard by the throat, it digs in his claws, and the traveler screamed, “You’re hurting me now.” To which the angel said, “I never said it wouldn’t hurt you. I said it wouldn’t kill you.”

“It is a mistake to suppose that men succeed through success; they much oftener succeed through failures. Precept, study, advice, and example could never have taught them so well as failure has done.” ~Samuel Smiles

25 Cents Worth: Several years ago, a preacher from out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he rode the bus from to downtown & when he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “Give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.” Then he thought, “It’s only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? The bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it.’” When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change.” The driver, with a smile, replied, “Aren’t you the new preacher at the church over on Oak? I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I’ll see you at church on Sunday.” When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold your Son & my integrity for a quarter.” {edited slightly}

“Living doesn’t cost much, but showing off does.” ~Jeffrey D. Sachs, The Price of Civilization: Reawakening American Virtue and Prosperity

“The most dangerous risk of all is spending your life NOT doing what you want, on the bet that you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” ~Randy Komisar

“The moment you give up is the moment you let someone else win.” ~Kobe Bryant

“I realized that intimidation didn’t really exist if you’re in the right frame of mind.” ~Kobe Bryant

“Paying attention to known risks is smart. But we should acknowledge that what can’t see, aren’t talking about, and aren’t prepared for will likely be more consequential than all the known risks combined.” ~Morgan Housel, Risk Is What You Don’t See
