MY FAVE JAPANESE SKIN CARE FIND: BOXES OF SHEET MASKS FOR DAILY USE

I’ve said it quite a few times but the drugstores in Tokyo are seriously next level.

They have some of the most innovative products that make you think: wow, why haven’t we gotten that yet?

That’s the story to these Japanese face masks which I teased about here.

In fact, I was on the train in Tokyo. FIRST OFF, let’s talk the public transportation in Tokyo. IT IS INCREDIBLE. For a good read, check out this link: The Amazing Psychology of Japanese Train Stations

Not only is it super aesthetically pleasing – it’s also efficient & just so 4019 while we are in 2019. As busy as they are, they aren’t hectic at all & everyone is so respectful to everyone’s space as well as their train experience.

Anyways, last time we were there, I was watching the Japanese TV commercials on the train and one TOTALLY caught my eye. Let’s just say my jaw was on the ground the whole time.

This was March 2018 and I have yet to see ANYTHING like this in America… or anywhere else really.

Basically, it was a tissue box of face masks. Think a box of 30-50 face masks

& just as if she was reaching for a tissue, she casually grabbed a mask out of the box by her bed and put it on her face

I basically grabbed Erik’s hand and RAN to the nearest Tomod’s {more on Tomod’s here} to get my hands on a box or ten.

Ever since, these Japanese face masks have been a monthly staple in my bathroom.

In fact, every single morning, I use a face mask. I do it as my morning routine rather than my nightly one. It sounds like a LOT but these masks only need about 10 minutes tops.

As mentioned here, I put on this body lotion lotion & then get started with my skincare routine. That way, as soon as everything is done, all the oils have absorbed {~10 mins & I wear a robe while I do it}.

Basically, they are sheet masks that are coated with “essence” or “lotion” or “toner” Japanese toners are so different than what we can find here. They are more of a serum & super hydrating vs astringent. I talked a bit about it here, including the one I LOVE. I have a full blown dedicated to it coming vvvv soon but it’s the Hada Labo hyaluronic acid toner.

Back to the masks

Think of a tissue box with the masks neatly stacked on top of each other. Each mask has a cut out for the eyes, nose, & mouth.

The masks are 100% cotton, alcohol free, preservative free and you can even use it for your entire skincare! In fact, many will have “all in one” written on the box specifying that.

However, I use it before I do my moisturizer because honestly, I love the moisturizer I use so much. Using both the masks daily with the moisturizer, it gives my skin a VERY dewy, glassy, almost translucent like finish.

This is the order I do it in, from start to finish:

double wash face {with this face wash & this hyaluronic acid foam}

tap with my fingers, not a pad, on a toner {I alternate between this hyaluronic one and this one}

put on a sheet mask {what this post is about!}, ~10ish mins

tap in the leftover essence, again with my fingers {I’ll make a full post on tapping, let me know if you have any questions in the comments}

finish with moisturizer {this skin plumping gel cream I’ve used for over a year straight and still going}

finish with sunscreen {currently using this one – Japanese sunscreens are THE BEST. another post for another day}

& finally end with this cc cream

The two brands I’ve tried in this format are Quality First & Lululun… & I like them both a lot. The ones photographed here exclusively are Lululun.

You can get them on Amazon but since they do come from Japan, the price can fluctuate. I find Lululun is slightly less expensive.

I’ll talk Quality 1st first.

This was the brand of Japanese face masks I saw on the train. It comes in a variety of masks: Pink “Moisture”; White “Brightening”; & Gold “The Best.

Out of the three, I tried Moisture & The Best. I have not tried the White one. As far as which one to try, it depends on what you want. “The Best” is their anti-aging one & I brought home a few boxes of it from Tokyo. There is def an upcharge on this one if you are buying from abroad. Here is the best price on ebay & here is the amazon link.

Cliff notes on all 3:

Gold “The Best” { amazon || ebay } :: the name doesn’t lie – this mask was AMAZING. It has up to 63 skin beautifying ingredients and three different types of hyaluronic acid. It’s a richer essence used & the thickest mask of them all.

Pink “Moisture” { amazon || ebay } :: this has up to 37 skin beautifying ingredients such as collagen, hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, . In fact, this mask was voted best in 2015 in Cosme, a well-regarded beauty & cosmetic review site in Japan. This one is about 30% thicker than the normal face mask.

White “Brightening” { amazon } :: includes Vitamin C, Nano White, & placenta extract. This is made for brightening & each box has the equivalent of 37 {!!} bottles of serum & 28% thicker than the normal face mask.

Okay next brand – Lululun

Lululun was a brand that caught my eye as soon as I discovered these sheet mask boxes. The packaging is adorable & they are a bit easier to get and find, especially on Amazon. They also have a US website.

In fact, they’re so easy, I have them on subscription & pause accordingly when I’m trying another style.

There is a variety of them: Precious {Red; Gold & Green } as well as Regular {Blue; Pink; White}

They have a variety of others but today, I’m going to talk the full on box {the others come in a pack of 5 vs a pack of 32

cliff notes on LuLuLun

PRECIOUS :: aka their line of anti-aging masks, slightly thicker than the Regular line

Red { amazon || ebay } :: An intense moisture boost with anti-aging properties. The main ingredient of this one is rice: rice bran, rice bran extract & hydrolyzed rice extract.

Green { amazon } :: I’m dying to try this one next but it has “L22”, a moisturizing ingredient that imitates the sebum balance of 22 year old skin. Apparently it’s the most luxurious ingredient of all three of them.

Gold { amazon || ebay } :: the brightening / whitening one of the mix. Full of multivitamins such as Vitamin C / E / B as well as natural extracts like rose apple leaf & avocado.

Regular :: their original line of masks with 3 layer structure

Pink { amazon || ebay } :: think super hydrating with each box having the equivalent to 4 bottles of serum. This has a blend of hyaluronic acid, honey, & rice ceramide.

Blue { amazon || ebay } :: designed for extremely dry skin. Includes a trademarked ingrdient, Lipidure to really quench skin, as well as hyaluronic acid & other moisturizers

White { amazon || ebay } :: to improve skin tone – would give this a try for acne prone or oily skin with scarring. Ingredients include Vitamin C {glow}; Kiwi / Prune / Plant extract {improved skin tone & balance}; & fucogel to moisturize.

This is honestly one of the coolest, most innovative products I saw in Japan and I would not be surprised if we start doing it in a few years here.

A quick note: using a mask daily is excessive but the box packaging really cuts down extraneous packaging, especially when compared to single use masks. They are cotton so they could be composted? If I had a backyard, I’d give that a go but for now, I’m looking into TerraCycle. Here’s a great blog post on the topic from Lululun. Any other suggestions on this, let me know.

OKAY- is your mind as blown as mine? If you have any questions, be sure to let me know!!

ps – be sure to use my links as they are legit. There are certain things I vet before I use a specific link. There are lots of “fake” products in the beauty world, especially with international brands. Full disclosure, ebay is not affiliate & amazon is. I don’t care about the cents I can make but I DO care that you get the correct, legit product.. not some sketchy fake. If I left out an Amazon or an ebay link on any product, it was intentional. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions re: these masks or my links.
