Few things are more comforting than a good soup in my book! This time of year, I tend to love lighter, fresher meals & this detox soup always hits the spot.

I love it because it’s suuuuper light, healthy, comforting & most importantly: beyond easy to make.

Honestly, it’s as easy as putting everything in a pot and simmering for about an hour, strain, & serve!

& since you have to strain & discard everything, you can give everything a quick rough chop! Throw in the onion skins while you’re at it. SUPER easy to prep & no need to get perfect.

Whenever I think detox, I immediately think ginger, turmeric, cayenne, & lemon. Remember my detox water??

Here, we have turmeric root, ginger root, smashed garlic, celery, onion, sea salt, black pepper, cayenne, & bay leaf. I cook with these often, it’s basically my “California blend” – and the options are always endless.

It’s super, super versatile so make it yours! Do as much or as little of any ingredient as you want or go ahead and sub what you’d like. This would be particularly delicious with maybe some lemongrass or shallots or

If you want to make this vegetarian, after straining, add in chopped vegetables (may I suggest adding some riced cauliflower too like this recipe?!} & chickpeas and simmer for an additional 20-30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

& don’t forget the squeeze of lemon before serving!! This step is one of my fave cooking tips of all time & crucial for that added zing & brightness!

bone in, skin on chicken breasts

ginger root, sliced

turmeric root, sliced {turmeric powder works too!}

celery, chopped

onion, chopped

carrot, chopped

garlic cloves, smashed

bay leaf

sea salt {maldon is my forever fav}


chili flakes

black pepper


olive oil

In a large pot, add chicken, ginger, turmeric, celery, onion, carrot, garlic, bay leaf, sea salt, cayenne, chili, flakes, & black pepper & fill with water until everything is covered. Bring to a simmer & cook for an hour.

Remove chicken from pot. Remove skin & bones, toss back in the soup pot. Shred with two forks, set aside.

Strain soup & reserve all liquid. I like to do this in another soup pot. Toss out vegetables & chicken scraps.

Add chopped greens, shredded chicken, a drizzle of olive oil & squeeze a lemon.

Serve in bowls & enjoy!

***I especially love this served with toasted buttered baguettes, topped with chili flakes & maldon sea salt. It gets the soup all nice and brothy & buttery – it’s such a treat!!***

Enjoy!! It’s especially delicious with some fresh herbs and quinoa or with a dash of soy sauce or miso paste, sliced scallions with brown rice. & if you’re feeling a cold coming on, the broth is divine to sip on!!

& trust me, always have soup with some toasted, buttered crostinis or baguettes. Add some sea salt {preferably Maldon} & chile flakes – dip in your soup and every bite just gets better & brothier & buttery-er. mmmm

trust me on this, Maldon Salt is THE BEST salt!!

Speaking of, sometimes I like this over some buttered noodles with sea salt & a little chile flakes… same deal!! just be sure to finish with some lemon & olive oil.

One last thing! Super easy to make and then jet to a yoga class… come home, get to shredding and you’re all set.
