time to binge!

Ahhhh that “in between Christmas & New Year’s” time of year.

I personally love these sleepy days between the two holidays! In fact, sometimes there’s nothing better than to have a complete lazy day & BINGE on some TV before the resolutions start!

I thought it would be fun to share some of my absolute fave TV & movies here as a list.

To sum it up, I really like “smart” comedies, neo-noir, or drama – the ones that really make you think. I also like darker movies & shows – I’m a huge fan of satire & black comedies… but my taste is def on the darker side of things.

SO- if your taste is similar to mine & you never know what to watch, here’s a list for ya!

essellesse picks: my fave tv & movies of all time

American Psycho: “With chiseled good looks that belie his insanity, an investment banker takes pathological pride in yuppie pursuits and indulges in sudden homicidal urges.” this is my absolute favourite movie of all time, which is no surprise to anyone as so much I do pays homage to that film. It’s a social satire based in the 80s on Wall Street, yuppie culture, excess, & even the toxic masculinity. A true all star cast with Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Theroux, Chloe Sevigny, Jared Leto, & soooo much more. Also, the costumes are ICONIC.

Desperate Housewives: “Secrets and truths unfold through the lives of female friends in one suburban neighborhood, after the mysterious suicide of a neighbor.” I strongly believe this is the best TV show of all time. I recently finished a binge of this from start to finish & was completely blown away. It’s one as I watch as I get older {I’m now officially in their age range!} REALLY hits home & made me cry more times than I care to admit. The script, casting, really everything is so beyond smart & well done. They also handle really, REALLY dark topics with grace. It’s one of those shows that I ask myself “what would I do if it happened to me” & some, I truly do not have the answers for. I feel like everyone will relate to different aspects of each of the housewives & you will see people you know in a lot of the characters. Also, your boyfriend or husband will love it too – I feel as if it is just as much the husband’s of the housewives show as it is the ladies in it. In fact, the character development on this is PHENOMENAL for every single character. I should also mention that this has absolutely nothing to do with the whole “Housewives” franchise {fwiw, I’m NOT a reality tv fan at all}. Seriously, if you’ve never seen this show, add it to the top of your list & get ready for a wild ride.

Gossip Girl: “A group of hyperprivileged Manhattan private-school kids seem to get away with everything. Except an anonymous blogger is watching their every move.” Like American Psycho, I pay a lot of homage to Gossip Girl too. Well, except for the last season {AWFUL}, but Gossip Girl is another very smart show that’s perfectly cast & VERY ahead of it’s time. They basically called the whole influencer world before it was a thing and you will hear them refer to the girls as “influencers” even back in 2010. Also, this may be controversial but I’m pro Blair + Dan and anti Blair + Chuck any day. Chuck is a huge dick to her {sorry, have to say it} & weakened her & imho Dan truly met her intelligence & wit.

Cruel Intentions: “Two vicious step-siblings of an elite Manhattan prep school make a wager: to deflower the new headmaster’s daughter before the start of term.” If that description sounds ridiculous, it’s because it is. This movie makes no sense yet at the same time completely epic & iconic. All star cast with Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, & Sarah Michelle Gellar and so much inspo with fashion {Manhattan in the 90s/00s!} & interiors. I LOVE everything Kathryn wears.

You: “A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.” tbh, this is probably the darkest of the list & it very much has an American Psycho / Patrick Bateman vibe. Penn Badgley {who also plays Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl} is a phenomenal actor and will CHILL you to the bones in this series. I’m super excited because the new season starts TODAY! It’s set in LA which I love and rumour has it it really takes on influencer culture in a brutal way. In fact, season 2 is apparently much darker than the first season if you can believe it. Anyways, ‘You’ will really make you re-evaluate what you share on social media. We are starting it tonight & Erik hasn’t seen the first season so wish him luck!

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: “Still pining for Josh, the boy who dumped her ages ago, whip-smart lawyer Rebecca jettisons her New York life and moves to California to win him back.” This show, truly, blew me away. Since I’m not the biggest comedy person, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this but it is SO good. The last season is an absolute standout and the finale is one of the best on TV I’ve ever seen. It’s incredibly smart & they dive into topics like mental illness, social media, depression, & even the dark web. I also loved their quips on the legal field! I did not expect to love this show as much as I did & Rachel Bloom truly knocked it out of the park, both as a director and actress. I really can’t recc this show enough, it’s so clever & the characters are fun. I personally loved Trent LOL he was so nuts & I was soooo team Nathaniel. {more here & here}

Devious Maids: “Four Latina maids with ambition and dreams of their own work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills.” If you like Desperate Housewives, binge on this next! Eva Longoria joins Marc Cherry as a producer & it’s just so well done – you’ll see a lot of the same cast from Desperate Housewives too! Also, I STRONGLY believe this was Eva calling out Harvey Weinstein in the last season.

90210: “A Kansas family relocates to Beverly Hills, where their two children adapt to the infamous social drama of West Beverly Hills High.” So, I LOVE the reboot of this. Fun fact, but they eventually brought on the producers of Gossip Girl to this to help them bring Los Angeles & Beverly Hills to life the same way they did with New York City. There’s a few crossovers and easter eggs which is always fun but another teen drama show that focuses on very real issues. Not to mention, I absolutely love Los Angeles so it’s always fun for me to see how it’s portrayed. If you liked Gossip Girl, you’ll enjoy this. It’s also fun to see the fashion as it’s VERY reminiscent of the late 2000s & early 2010s.

Nip/Tuck: “The dark and twisted trials of two plastic surgeons.” Whenever I think of Nip/Tuck, I think of binging on it at my best friend’s house back in high school in The Woodlands, Texas. We were OBSESSED with this show. Set in Miami & later LA, it follows two plastic surgeons & their patients, including the aftermath of the procedures. A super compelling & racy drama with deep, complex storylines. I remember being completely TERRIFIED of the The Carver – seriously one of the scariest villians of all time in my book.

Euphoria: “Euphoria follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma, and social media.” This was some of the best tv of 2019 and I can’t wait for the second season. It’s dark & intriguing and every episode made me want more. It’s brutally honest & extremely well done. Drake is one of the executive producers and the scenes tying in music with the drug use are insanely good. { more here }

True Blood: Telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill, a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.” One of HBO’s best shows in my opinion. I especially LOVED the second season: it’s set in Dallas {my old home} and is seriously an epic season with the CRAZY church. In fact, Steve Newlin is one of my absolute fav characters in it {& I LOVEEEEE Michael McMillian as an actor in general}. It’s a really powerful season, in general. TBH, the later seasons I think are just okay but still a good watch all around. Russell Edgington was my other fav character too & he’s just so totally nuts!

The Dark Knight: As Batman, Lt. Gordon and the district attorney continue to dismantle Gotham’s criminal underground, a new villain threatens to undo their good work.” This is forever one of the best movies of all time. I remember when I first saw it in 2008, it rocked my world in such a major way and what made me truly fall in love with the complexity of the Joker. What fascinates me about TDK is that everything is completely reversed. If you listen to the Joker, everything he is saying is true & everything society is doing & saying is wrong & it’s truly shown at the end of the movie with the two boats. It’s a total mind-kcuf. Two stand out scenes to me is when he’s dressed as a cop without makeup {it shows that, after all, the Joker is just human} & the fact that you will see him with makeup on his hands, to imply that the Joker does his makeup himself every morning – it’s pretty chilling if you think about it. It’s also crazy that Heath Ledger was only 27/28 in this role, he was absolutely iconic.

Joker: “Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego: the Joker.” The Joker is my absolute favourite character of all time, so I was beyond stoked for this. His story has always intrigued me because at the end of the day, he turned into one of the most chaotic criminals of all time after having a “really bad day”. So it’s always interesting to see takes of his origin story. Joaquin Phoenix truly knocked it out of the park & was perfectly cast. The major twist in the movie will have you floored and questioning everything… just as the Joker would want.

A Clockwork Orange: “The head of a gang of toughs is conditioned to become physically ill at sex and violence during a prison sentence. When he is released, he’s beaten by all of his old adversaries” I mean, you can tell from the description it’s a really kcufed up, dark movie, but it’s one of those movies that will stay with you forever. I also love Stanley Kubrick & this is one of my favs from him. This is one of the darker, more disturbing ones on the list so know before you watch!

Whiplash: “Driven by his demanding music teacher, drummer Andrew is determined to succeed as a jazz musician — even if it destroys his personality.” This was one of the best, most powerful movies of the decade and one that has really stuck with me years later. It’s the brink of being pushed to greatness or insanity – that is a line that can be very hard to walk. What is the price of greatness?

Black Swan: “ambitious New York City ballet dancer lands the lead in “Swan Lake” but soon thinks her dreams of stardom are threatened by a rival ballerina”. If you loved Whiplash, then you’ll love this one too & vice versa. I personally love movies & TV on ballet. Another story of passion driving you to the point of insanity – such an epic watch starring Natalie Portman & Mila Kunis.

Django Unchained:Accompanied by a German bounty hunter, a freed slave named Django travels across America to free his wife from a sadistic plantation owner.” This is probably my fave Quentin Tarantino movie & Leonardo DiCaprio was incredible as Calvin Candie – imho it was one of his best roles of all time. Absolutely supurb cast & I love that it’s a mix of a Western too. Friendly reminder that this is a Tarantino movie so get ready for all the shock value, gore, & more.

Bojack Horseman: Meet the most beloved sitcom horse of the ’90s, 20 years later. He’s a curmudgeon with a heart of…not quite gold…but something like gold. Copper?” THIS. SHOW. True story- when Erik first started watching it, I was NOT a fan. I’m just not really the biggest “cartoon” fan, even for adults. But I started watching it with him and became hooked. It was much more complex and a bit darker than I expected. One of the most iconic episodes of all time is “Stupid Piece of Sh*t” which is all on the inner monologue while dealing with depression & self laothing, it’s a powerful episode.

Eyes Wide Shut: “An argument about fidelity sends a married physician reeling into the night, where he finds himself in a surreal succession of sexual encounters”. Another Kubrick film {his last} andddd it stars Nicole Kidman & Tom Cruise – in fact, they were married when this was filmed! This is one of those movies designed to be watched numerous times because every single scene is basically a riddle and full of symbolism.

Last Night: “During an evening apart, married couple Joanna and Michael encounter tempting opportunities to cheat on each other with sexy acquaintances.” Beautifully made, provocative romantic drama starring Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, & Sam Worthington. These types of movies are prob my fav – it’s more of a romantic drama vs comedy?

Closer: “The lives of four strangers intersect in a complex series of events and affairs over a four-year period.” if you like Last Night, you’ll like this as they are pretty similar in tone. It’s a brilliant movie of betrayal, complexities of relationships, & deception. All characters are flawed and portrayed by an all star cast: Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, & Clive Owen.

& if you want horror? here is a list of some really scary movies, including the #1 scariest movie of all time that really kcufed my world up after seeing it

happy watching yall! xx

any others i need to add to my list?
